Holy guacamole! how god used an avocado to change my life
God used an avocado to change my life
It was a few minutes after noon on a Monday when the text flashed across my phone.
I’m thinking of making you some guacamole, are you able to swing by?
I sighed.
After weeks of careful and meticulous planning, this was to have been the kick-off day. Where all those details became the hours of my Monday.
Nothing had gone right yet. What was intended as a day to stay home and focus on what really mattered (according to my freshly penned plans) had been a run-around mess.
I’d forgotten to be somewhere important. While heading there several errands got added to the growing to-do list. While I was out.
Except, I’d also forgotten it was a national holiday and that 3 of my 4 destinations were officially closed for the day.
When the text came through, the mounting sense of urgency almost made me say no.
I wanted to see this person. It just didn’t seem feasible today. But then I remembered, that my word of the year is DO.
I said yes.
Guacamole led to an encounter in God’s presence
Be open to unexpected encounters. It turned out to be best decision I never wanted to make.
God was gently wooing me and about to make His presence known in unimaginable ways.
Guacamole is one my favorite things to eat, and this person knew that. It had come up once while chatting briefly.
It seemed odd that she would offer this, out of the blue. On a weekday noontime.
The other unusual thing was that I was about to get in my car. Two minutes from her house.
I live a good 20 minutes on the other side of town.
I was only over there for my forgotten appointment.
Getting in the car, fighting back guilt over saying yes, I zipped over expecting to be in and out pretty quick.
These two things were just the beginning of the most profound encounter I’ve experienced in a long time. Profound in the kind of way that only God, seriously, could orchestrate.
One explosive thing after another came tumbling out of our mouths with excitement!
She shared an art journal she was making, and I was stunned. For there on the cover was my favorite artist.
Guacamole and approaching dusk
We poured out our hearts with an unexpected depth that passed the hours away. Hours.
She chopped the onions. Minced the garlic. Mashed the avocados.
Shocked, I noticed the clock and was about to say I must run! Before I could, she quietly pulled out two plates. Two forks. The guacamole. And took them to the dining table.
We shared from places seldom explored. For good reason. And the shadows grew long.
She spoke life and truth into my life, so specific, so detailed I was flabbergasted.
She pulled out her Bible and said, This is for you too right now Christa:
From Isaiah 54:2-4
Enlarge the place of your tent,And let them stretch out the curtains of your dwellings;
Do not spare; Lengthen your cords,
And strengthen your stakes.
For you shall expand to the right and to the left…Do not fear, for you will not be ashamed; For you will forget the shame of your youth
It was completely spot on with our conversation and dream sharing and pain healing.
It was dark as we hugged and wiped the happy tears from our eyes.
God used what became Holy guacamole
6 1/2 hours had passed.
It took days to process this experience. I almost missed it with my preconceived idea of what the day SHOULD hold. How God must chuckle at us, like stubborn children, wanting to do things “our” way.
Be open to what seems unusual this week.
God used my favorite food to woo me, a midday text, a book cover, a hug. Truthfully, without the guacamole on this crazy day? I might have taken a rain check.
But that was too specific on an icy day. 2,600 miles from the childhood memories that taught me of their goodness. Too specific that I happened to be right there.
This day sent me floating home. Convinced of what would be coming. What I was capable of and what God could do through me. I could barely sleep with amazement.
And would you believe she sent me on my way, expressing overwhelming gratitude of what I blessed HER with that day?
Only God could do that. Take two women who both thought they got the bonus. As if the other woman was just the giver, not the recipient.
I smiled and said, I’m glad.
And I was.

It’s truly amazing how God works! I’m a youth leader and am often asked HOW to hear God – this story demonstrates that – it’s listening to the nudgings, being open to letting wise friends speak truth, and acting on those truths 🙂 Beautiful reminder!
Hi Megan! Isn’t that so true, it the smallest of things. That is so cool you lead youth, think of the power in learning that as a young person, instead of much later in life!
Hello Christa, this morning i dreamt that an ovacado tree was at my window with beautiful fruits. I called on to my aunt, her daughter and maid to come and they didnt care so I removed 3 ovacados as I put them on my bed and I wanted more but couldn’t reach them. So when I woke up I wanted to know what the dream meant then I landed on this e-mail. I feel peace and satisfaction I guess.
Just landed here after searching for the meaning of avocado dream.as I dreamed that someone picked 2 avocado from the three and gave them to me.
I was just awoken by the loudest thunder and lightning I am talking loud and a few words came to mind along with Avocado, and since I know the Lord has been giving me words for months I googled avocado meaning in the Bible and landed here 🙂
Really, that is wild! You made me chuckle too. I hope the Lord brought a little clarity once your heart stopped beating too fast! Thanks for visiting 🙂
