7 Essential Writing Tips For Bloggers
7 Essential Writing Tips For Bloggers
Are you considering starting a blog? Or maybe you already have one and want to improve the quality.
Let’s go over 7 tips today that can move you forward towards a blog you are proud of!
First, let’s smash one myth right now, ok?
There is a widely spread fear that with the gazillion blogs out there, YOUR ideas would be unnecessary. Insignificant.
That is so, so not true. You are here, aren’t you? I am not a big-name blogger…
Yet, to some? This blog is just where they need to be.
Our ideas are original because we are the only one who sees through our own lens!
You are just like me, we ALL have something worthwhile to say. It might take some time, maybe a long time, for the readers to find us.
That should have no bearing on us writing now, we just keep working.
Blog writing tips for beginners:
1. First Impressions matter. Look over your blog with a critical eye towards aesthetics. It is said that the content will speak for itself. I disagree, with a rare exception. How many blogs have you clicked on with flashing ads and cluttered backgrounds, that you thought “Hmm, I bet the material is stellar.”
It might very well be! But the truth is, most readers scan content and within seconds decide to read or click on it. Give them something pleasant to enjoy. Start with your header, you can hire a professional for a reasonable price, or create on Canva
2. Don’t Settle For What You Know. Your blog is your cyber baby. Treat it well. Let it grow and change as YOU do. There is a lot of information out there, almost nothing you can’t teach yourself through a good tutorial or book.
There are people who want to share their knowledge with you, for free on places like Pinterest or topic specific blogs!
3. Read Widely. Make it a habit to read, and not just the normal style you enjoy. Cruise the library’s new releases, take home a pile in all varieties and see what is out there. We tend to read certain genres that we already enjoy.
The more variety you put in? The better your writing will be. The brain will be challenged and absorb new styles and ideas. If reading isn’t your thing, as a writer, work on that. Reading makes better writers (so I read…)
4. Write Like You Talk. We read so many things that teach us to write with correct grammar, style, and other fancy rules. It seems like in blogging there is flex room in this area. If you read my writing, you are hearing me, just like we were sitting in my living room having a conversation. That is my trademark.
Your readers will appreciate hearing you. Be authentic. This doesn’t mean to give up and write with sloppy wording and no capitals. Little grammar. It is a fine line, write like you talk, but keep growing.
Somewhere in the last few years, it became popular to write long rambling sentences without periods and capitalization. I’ve seen several blogs in this style, and while eir content might be good? My eye struggles too hard to focus.
Be you, while being considerate of the readers
5. Use Great Pictures. You can take great pictures now, no need to wait for the fancy camera. A few tips can make a huge difference.
Use pictures often, make sure they are clear, and size them correctly so they don’t slow down everyone’s computers. Guilty here on that count
6. Make Time Often. Write as often as you can, the more you write the better you’ll become! There is no need to hit the “Publish” button right away, save the drafts for the future. But keep writing.
For me, I sure find that when I go too long without keeping up the rhythm? It is like being in verbal quicksand, floundering to get out of the mental fog
7. Keep Life Interesting. If your writing feels stale, and that happens to everyone, step back and consider your lifestyle. Perhaps it has been a bit dull lately? Go out with your camera, look closely for the details of life and you will find new ideas.
Writing tips and resources
The best habit I can share is to never stop looking at life as amazing. It is a practiced art and will serve you well as a writer.
Having a blog is a responsibility, we need to do our best work. But we also need to balance that out with giving readers a piece of ourselves, sharing what we can to change the world.
Here are a few resources that I have really loved:
You can do this!
Popular books for bloggers

If you can swing a bigger investment? This is worth every cent. I have been writing and blogging since 2008. When I started hearing about the SEO Boot Camp course from Kingdom Bloggers, I wasn’t sure if it was right for me.
I am over the moon that I jumped in, because I learned more in 8 weeks than in the 10 years prior in regards to the nuts and bolts behind the scenes of writing material that can encourage and inspire others in a way that they can FIND it. SEO wasn’t a thing back in the day.
I can’t say enough about the information packed into this course and the VALUE of what it held for me, and for many people I know who fel the same renewed confidence after taking it!
It would be great for beginners who can do things “right” from the outset. (It opens again in January 2022, bookmark this and write it on your calendar!)
But also, for people like me who are long-term invested and need to update our skillset!

Glad you were encouraged James, keep up the good work
This is really really great advice and I especially like the last suggestion. If you’re not doing anything worth writing about, well then…
Plus Kathleen, the added bonus is that we get to enjoy living that much more 🙂
Well said Christa.
I appreciate that Kathryn, it is good to share what we learn
Great tips Christa! Sometimes all bloggers need a little encouragement, especially the new ones!
We sure do! Thanks for taking time to comment Ana Lynn, they always encourage me to keep plugging
Excellant tips, every single one is right on!
This is a really great post and you write very well Christa!
It’s hard to make down my favorite from your last, but #4 would have to be it. Writing in my voice had really taken my blog to another level and it had allowed me to connect with more people.
Great post! Thank you for writing it!
Ellory

well said.
Thanks La
I love your tips. My favorite is to read wide variety. I know I’ve gotten stuck reading a few favorites, so I’m going to stretch myself and find new blogs outside my bubble. Great Post!
I hear ya Charity, especially when we have limited time to read, we want to choose something we know we’d like!
3, 4, 6 and 7! So glad I found you on IG and you mentioned this post 🙂 I just finished a mystery thriller (something that I would generally never read) and find that it’s sparked a little sumthin’ extra in my writing. Your points are dead on!
That’s awesome Cristina! Thanks for letting me know, I appreciate that
Thanks for submitting this to the Blogging + Business Collective for July. All submissions get pinned to Pinterest. Have a great Sunday!
Thanks Joanne!
Thanks for this very insightful piece. I love how you encourage people to write in their own voice as though they were speaking.
Thanks Mike, welcome! I personally enjoy reading “real” voices that aren’t fluffy or patronizing. Life is too short 🙂
