Being content with what you have brings rest to weary hearts

Isn’t it fun when we give someone an awesome gift? Something we just know they are going to love?

We are ten days out from our cross-country move. There are the fingerprints of a generous giver all over this transition. It is such an extravagant gift, I almost was afraid to accept it.

You see, when this move first came about, it was completely unexpected. Every single thing about it has gone extraordinarily smooth.

Not typical for a move, right? It seemed freakishly impossible.

We didn’t ask for this gift. Something so grand wasn’t even on our radar. Yet, God saw fit to give it to us. Our heart’s desire to be closer to “home”.

It finally settled into my brain, just why this was so hard to accept. The way this all has worked out…

What does being content in life mean?

Our life has been rich, but we haven’t. We couldn’t have dreamed that things would keep unfolding like they have been. It hasn’t been our life experience.

And now, we see that is part of the gift too.

God is going crazy in His generosity, and I didn’t know how to take that. My views of Him have always been favorable, knowing He is a good and loving God.

I just didn’t really grasp that sometimes, still, He just wants to blow our minds with his generosity.

This is that time.

The rough years and situations that preceded this? They were important and necessary training ground. We needed to go through things, grow and become ready for the next phase.

We had to learn to be content. To unlearn control and complaint. To choose gratitude as a practice.

Resting in the Lord sometimes just means to come, no expectations, and just be.

It’s not how much we have, but how much we enjoy, that makes happiness  – Charles Spurgeon

being content quotes

How can a person be content?

I’m learning to rest in the gift of extravagance. To not try to figure out the whys and the how-comes.

Sometimes, perhaps, we are missing the gift by wasting energy on calculations that don’t add up. By telling ourselves 100 reasons why this can’t be, why we don’t deserve it.

Instead, I want to walk forward with gratitude. Humility regarding the way that people are going before us to prepare the way.

Expectant and delighted to see what He has in store for us. Without waiting for the other shoe to drop, you know what I mean?

The art of being happy lies in the power of extracting happiness from common things–Henry Ward Beecher

Resting in the gift might just be the ultimate present. Because there we find His presence in a new and intimate way.

We are ready to do the work He has prepared in advance for us to do, trusting with a new level of childlike awe and thankfulness.
