Marriage-The act of uniting a man and woman for life; wedlock; the legal union of a man and woman for life. marriage is a contract both civil and religious, by which the parties engage to live together in mutual affection and fidelity, till death shall separate them- Webster’s 1828 dictionary
Marriage-the state of being united as spouses in a consensual and contractual relationship recognized by law- Merriam Webster, modern day
The last few seasons have been marked with unwelcome challenges in my life, that definitely affected my marriage. My husband and I have been faced with obstacles we’d hoped to never revisit, and the truth is, we didn’t always handle it well.
When we were tired and irritable and fearful? It felt almost impossible to treat each other with kindness some days. To not take out all of our frustrations on each other. There were days we just had to chalk it up to a flop and start fresh.
Again, and again.
However, the history of our love and commitment kept us secure in the knowledge that we were truly a team. That we would be there for each other through it all, even when we were frankly, tired of trying.
Marriage advice from old couples
Healthy marriages are imperfect, and that is ok!
Reading the above definitions, did you catch the shift? We choose to fight for the gift of “mutual affection till death shall separate us”. The distinction matters.
Both of our girls will be married within 6 months of each other in our season. We pray that they have seen our determination throughout their lives, and will emulate it. That they will expect respect from their spouse, and extend that gift in return.
Our hearts deeply hope that they will fight through the inexperience of young love and reap the reward, the prize, of love well earned.
Healthy marriage is a gift I am constantly thankful for, and how we hope that our children have chosen partners that will live gratefully for the gift of a devoted wife!

When marriage struggles
Marriage is a topic that I passionately advocate for. Common challenges include an unwilling spouse, a sensitive issue of struggle with infidelity or pornography, or our own baggage that makes us the problem.
My heart goes out to each and every unique situation.
While I am clearly a big advocate for working out your marriage (I’ve seen amazing turnaround on the impossible-seeming situation!) that doesn’t mean this advice applies to ALL marriages. If you are married to someone who abuses you, whether physically, psychologically, or emotionally? Get help, and if you need to, please get out for your safety ♥
