Do essential oils work? Yes and no
For the past few years, we’ve all been hearing about essential oils. Honestly, I never gave them much thought, except a passing interest. Wondering if essential oils actually worked.
During the last year, I’ve been paying close attention to people I actually know that have had worthwhile success with them. Really paying attention.
Before I tell you what I like about these things, know this: I am a total skeptic of claims that tell you a few drops of anything are going to make a difference.
I was thinking they were probably just a marketing gimmick or something that health enthusiasts used. I am the opposite of a nature nut.
More like the girl voted most likely to have sugar coursing through her veins, instead of blood. At my baby shower? People actually brought gifts of snack cakes.
That should give you an idea…
Do doctors recommend essential oils?
Not mine…
Essential oils are not a cure-all. Please, let me share a few things I’ve discovered the last month while experimenting around. Don’t discount these until you read a bit more, deal?
This has been a brutal winter for me healthwise. Coupled with some anxiety issues, it was time to try something new.
Prescriptions are getting far too expensive and really, who wants to take them forever if you don’t need them?
That is why late winter seemed like a good time to jump in and try them out. I won’t bore you with tons of details, instead read here what essential oils are . I’ll share what has worked for me so far…enough that I never want to stop using them.
Do essential oils actually calm you?
Are you wondering now that they DO? Read the link to see some of the suggested ideas.
I am so excited, the reason my family is teasing me is that I am constantly saying “I have something for that!” with every complaint.
For the first time in a very long time, I have hope that my fibromyalgia can be managed, even perhaps…just maybe…disappear.
Why? Because I am constantly experimenting with different oils and am delighted with the results!
A few essential oils I like:
Thieves– I had a bleeding, very swollen gum. After a day of applying this directly to the site? Gone. Also, several times I have felt a cold coming on and rubbed it on my throat and diffused it into the air.
No sickness. I am normally the girl who catches it all, having a somewhat compromised immune system. I also applied it before traveling in the air to provide an extra layer of protection. Tons of sneezing and sniffling was going on around me. I ALWAYS get sinus infections, every single time I fly.
Not this time. Hmmm…
Pan Away, Deep Relief, Copaiba and Peppermint– My overall fibro is still here, but when applied to specific spots, I was really amazed by how these helped with ordinary aches and pains. Twice on sore days? I took a bath with Epsom salt and Peppermint and felt markedly less achy.
Lavender and Peace and Calming– I’m diffusing them every night in my bedroom. I am a lifelong insomniac, and bedtime is becoming seriously peaceful. They are honestly calming me down.
Also, when I was in anxiety-inducing situations several times this month, I applied them to my wrists. I could NOT believe this, but every single time I felt level and relaxed.
Joy and Lemon– Enjoying these just for aromatherapy purposes. Who knew aromatherapy could be so fun?
For fibromyalgia purposes, I am going to use three tools: Sulfurzyme, Ningxia Red (sort of an acquired taste, but not unpleasant), and essential oils. I’ll let you know how they work after some time passes and an honest appraisal can be had.
After so many years, I’d truly given up hope. Based on the results seen so far, that is changing. Read here for one person’s story.
Essential oils are worth trying
These ARE pretty strong smelling. Most of them are pleasant, so far only one completely grosses me out.
Now before you get the idea I am out to sell you stuff? I’m not. At all.
You won’t be seeing a lot of posts on this, that isn’t what my blog is about. Just sharing part of my journey towards a healthier life.
Whatever your health issues, or just peace of mind, it sure looks like someone else is already trying them out. It’s easy to search out testimonials.
One thing I do like? The aromatherapy benefits of just pleasant smells. So in that regard, essential oils work! 🙂
A disclaimer feels in order —I am not in the medical field, these statements are not evaluated by any health associations, or guarantees. Just one person’s story. Please, before starting any essential oil usage, check with your doctor. Know your body and be aware that these can be powerful and strong! Use wisely.
Update: After over a year, these were not a miracle cure I’d secretly hoped for to manage my Fibro. It DID help in many OTHER areas of my life, but not this one. That said, I would definitely try them for yourself. For many people, it is a saving grace. I use them daily still and love them.
Just remember, they take some time to build up, just like healthy lifestyle changes. And, there are other cheaper options (I also like Eden’s Garden and NOW that I can purchase on Amazon. Make sure you are getting from a reputable source) that get good reviews.
But before ingesting ANYTHING, do your research, please.
Just started using the Lemon oil this month.
What are you using it for Sundi Jo? I’d love to know
Christa,
This is a beautiful story about your journey with EO….It is so amazing when we wake up one day and find a healthy, healing and exciting answer to our needs. I love how pure they are and the no chemical added. Simple answers.
Lee Ann
Appreciate you reading today Lee Ann, it sure gives hope. Do you have an oil you are fond of?
I’d be very interested in a follow up post, Christa, of what you are using and how it works for you. I’ve been looking into trying essential oils myself–a friend of mine is a DoTerra distributor and swears by them. I hope you are seeing some relief, my friend. I appreciate you forging the way on this!
I will definitely let you know ♥
Thank you for all of this Christa.
Yes I am just getting to it.
It was worth the wait.
