Exploring Monterey on the California Coast- photography
A weekend treat for you- a visual and mental vacation! Recently, my husband and I took a road trip to the California Coast. It was so refreshing to have my camera in my hand, and the sea is so special to me!
Enjoy these zany seals as you relax in Monterey, California. We tried three times to live on the coast, but it wasn’t meant to be (yet).
My soul feels most at home along the wild ocean.
The Monterey Aquarium is amazing but was out of price range this go around. Luckily for us, the seals were out enjoying the sunshine.
Harbor Seals line the shore along Fisherman’s Wharf and are easy to see for free at the right time of day.
It was such a special surprise to be driving through during pup season. There were a few secluded spots along the coast where a photographer with a zoom lens could zoom in and see them.
On this sunny morning, there were several perched right near the beach. Kayakers were able to glide by and not disturb them while getting a view from just a few yards away.
Thankfully, it is against the law to disturb seals and other marine mammals.
Jellyfish have become quite a nuisance in the last year, according to local reports. While can cause problems for locals, they eat larvae and plankton and often wind up being food for other marine life.
But don’t walk barefoot on the beach without watching where you are going!
“Being at ease with himself put him at ease with the world.”
― John Steinbeck, Cannery Row
Do you enjoy reading John Steinbeck? His famous novel was set in this area…
Did you know Pacific Harbor seals can grow up to 6+ feet and weigh up to 290 lbs? You can read about them here.
Sometimes confused with Sea Lions, distinctive differences are noted when looking at their ears and flippers (and their noisy symphonies).
