The Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad- Photography
It had been a dream to come back and visit the D&SNGRR since I was a young girl.
The vintage steam engine is still coal-fired, and operates fully restored.
My aunt and uncle drove us to Silverton so that we could enjoy the 4 hour trip along the Animas River one way. That would allow us the day to spend in this historic mining town, and then a scenic and unique trip home.
I was over the moon excited to have this opportunity to fulfill my dream and capture photos from difficult to access places.
We all enjoyed breakfast together, then checked the train status to find that the engine had broken down…but a repair train had been sent. We eagerly waved off our family, confident things would work out.
My husband and I had a fantastic date day in this history-laden) town, celebrating our anniversary.
The weather was fickle. Sunny skies and gray clouds, fierce rain and sudden cold temperatures.
The elevation is about 9,300 feet and things change quickly in the mountains.
Our afternoon of delight was quickly cut to a close when we heard the crowds gathering at the posted time near the depot, but no train arrived.
The Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad had a problem.
That unpredictable weather? It caused two rock slides that made train travel home impossible. After all the excitement, we wound up having to catch a bus back down the mountain.
But, at least I was able to get the pictures of the train beforehand. This incident did become a family joke during the week. If you want to read more about how things didn’t work out as planned, click here.
We still had a fantastic day and I hope you enjoy the train through my eyes- the awe and wonder of a little girl living out her dreams.
Aside from having personal memories here, I am a lover of the rails (you can see the Louisville Trains here).
Love the photos!
