a slip ‘n slide, a girl, and her mother
Summer heat scorched the valley of my youth.
As the empty days without school loomed large with possibility, the grass faded from a fresh green to a crunchy yellow.
The box fan went into the window, the sun stayed up past my bedtime, and the bugs serenaded me each evening to sleep.
It was finally time to dig out the much anticipated, magic piece of yellow plastic.
What an amazing feeling, do you remember it? The first slip down the launch pad, under a cool watery canopy?
Some of my favorite summer memories involved a girl, her mother, and a slip ‘n slide.
Occasionally my mom would join me on a hot day, and together we’d enjoy a lazy afternoon.
Because playing with my mom was always a favorite way to spend time!

Today we have the addition of gadgets and a plethora of “stuff”.
Electronic toys are awesome, but there is an added life value in the simple moments of fun.
My mom had a simple rule. Go outside and play.
If I didn’t like that idea, she had a list of chores to be done.
An effective parenting tool if ever there was one!
She was diligent about teaching me a balance of playing alone vs. constantly wanting to be entertained.
I am so glad she persisted! My creativity was watered on those hot summer days, which bloomed into today’s resourcefulness.
Play with the kids this summer, but when you are done, I mean tired mama done, don’t feel guilty about letting them go it alone!
Kids have the most amazing potential to create imagination-filled adventures.
Give them a few tools, and they’ll surprise us with their ingenuity.
Simple outdoor fun can keep them entertained for hours.
