The importance of rest (how lazy days restore our spirit)
The importance of rest
Lazy days get a bad rap. That is coming from someone who cleans for therapy, haha!
That said, I had to learn the hard way that mellow days have value. Embracing being busy as a marker of the best life?
Overwhelm and overbusy can leave us a bit empty. We can’t give from a place of lack. So, how about considering adding a few lazy days to your calendar?
There is fun and freedom to be found in the art of relearning lackadaisical days. Do you long for a mental break? It can be a wonderful gift for your soul to practice a season of simplicity.
If you asked my kids, they would tell you that the unhurried days fostered some of the best memories of their lives.
And, so would I. ♥
Laziness isn’t a virtue, but in moderation can be a beneficial treat! The joy of really seeing the world around you can be hard to come by in a rush rush rush mindset. (Check out these ideas for how to say NO)
How to rest on lazy days
Here are a few EASY ideas to embrace a simple summer with a sprinkling of lazy days:
1. Enjoy a day of Christmas in July (when my kids were growing up, we would put up a few simple Christmas decorations and do Christmas crafts, watch a movie, music, and make snowman pancakes, etc. )
2. Create a fire pit to have a camp experience at home (s’mores anyone?)
3. Slip n’ slide in the grass (Who has great summer memories on this yellow piece of plastic?)
4. Find and support the local Special Olympics with some cheering! (My cousin Allison is an athlete, and we were able to go one year. It was the most fun, I promise you’ll love it. I’m hoping we’ll get to start volunteering soon here!)
5. Create an outdoor movie theater with a hanging sheet and host a “drive-in”, complete with snacks
6. Pick up some brochures from the Chamber of Commerce and see the local sights, such as free days
7. Enjoy random kindness missions and surprise someone who is hurting (Ecclesiastes 3)
8. Yard games are fantastic fun. We just filled up an old wagon in our garage with horseshoes, bocce balls, croquet, and vintage lawn darts. Ready to roll to the park
The benefits of rest
Yep, I’ve written about this many times! Let me share with you a few other posts with more in-depth ideas. Many of them are free, the best price! Check them out here, and here.
Because time off isn’t about competition, fancy trips, or entertaining our kids nonstop.
No days should be about those things.
Remember when we were kids? Time off meant exactly that…endless moments to be curious. That my friends, is a gift worth passing on to the next generation.
Lazy days, no matter what time of year, are restorative to our spirit. They allow us to turn off our brains and reset.
There isn’t anything lazy about a lazy day after all!
It is a gift to give ourselves…which ultimately translates to the ones we love. In the form of a peaceful parent. A loving wife. A caring friend.
That is the importance of lazy days.
Ecclesiastes 3:1 For everything there is a season, a time for every activity under heaven. (NLT)
Today is a great day to plan YOUR next restoration day. Peace be with you ♥.
