The Underground Railroad- Photography
The Underground Railroad- Photography
Based on our Midwest location, we are likely surrounded by many stops for the Underground Railroad. (read about the Levi Coffin house here).
One dark fall afternoon, we spent the better part of a day tracking down a tip on the location of a cabin of literary inspiration.
The famous book Uncle Tom’s Cabin, an anti-slavery novel by Harriet Beecher Stowe, includes a character named Eliza.
A true runaway slave named Eliza Harris stopped at this cabin while escaping to Canada.
She is said to have become an inspiration for Stowe.
We were comforted by the lack of commercialism and the respect that locals must have for keeping it hidden.
It is a treasure; and hopefully, these pictures honor the legacy of the Underground Railroad and the people who work so diligently to preserve its memory.
As I homeschool my kids I really need to give a lot of background to certain topics–the Underground Railroad is one of them–I have a hard time understanding segregation, so I can only imagine how my kids–40 years more removed . . . just don’t get it.
I have introduced the American Girl Doll, Addy, to our school work.
The kids love your photos! I can’t wait to show them these awesome historical photos!
These are really powerful, I can’t imagine how moving it must have been for you to walk the hallowed ground. I don’t think I’ve ever visited an underground railroad site. I got chills just looking at the photos.
Christa,
Loved these pics. Would love to visit a place like this with camera already attached to her eye. Really nice.
