There is a comfort that is found when I handle the dishes passed down through my family.
Knowing that my great-grandfather might have spooned his sugar from this dish, into his coffee.
Maybe he was reading the paper. Distracted with world events, or the day’s work.
When I gently finger the teacups of my great-aunt, I wonder if she preferred a solitary cup.
Or to join together with friends.
A smile lingers as I line up the salt and pepper shakers.
Remembering the holiday celebrations at my grandparent’s home, when these would be put into service.
The silverware that was carefully polished by my grandmother, is now entrusted to my care.
Even the china, with its chips and hairline cracks, only grow more beautiful with age.
There is a connection. It runs throughout our lives, tucked away in the cupboards.
A tangible piece where my hands touch the pieces of my family history, and I am part of the tree.
It is as if the hands of my loved ones are gently placed into my own, each time I wrap my fingers around a warm tea cup.
I squeeze them gently and imagine… life together.
