Why my mom is my hero- she chose the hard path for life
When I think about the beginning of my life, I am humbled. Grateful to my mom.
You see, I was conceived before marriage in a time when it was frowned upon. My mom married, and it ended badly. Quickly.
To be young, a single mom, and divorced must have been excruciatingly difficult. I know she suffered greatly. What she did that makes her my hero?
She gave me life. She is the beginning of my love story.
How much simpler her world might have been, to follow the emerging feminist movement and think of herself first. Not her child.
But she didn’t. I can’t imagine the courage it took to mother me. Her world was not stable, yet she gave me everything she had.
She worked hard, loved harder
Our world stabilized and she married my dad. My brother joined the world and our family was complete.
No matter her own suffering, she made my world special. Every holiday we’d happily decorate for. Christmas, we’d make cookies and listen to Johnny Mathis’s records.
On birthdays, my favorite dinner was planned and a special cake was made. She determined to set traditions that I could count on.
Because of my hero, I was able to be a mother myself, the greatest joy I’ve known.
My beautiful mother chose me.
And I embrace the world with joy because of it.
She is my heart. I love you mom.

For once in my life, I’m speechless, except for saying how blessed I have been to have been given three wonderful daughters who all developed into three wonderful mothers in their own right. My heart overflows with love for all of you, and your families as well.
Your mother was brave. You look like her in that bottom picture. She deserves to be your hero.
